Employer working time regulations

Working time regulations stipulate young workers aged 16 or 17 should not work:

  • more than 8 hours a day;
  • more than 40 hours in any given week;
  • at night i.e. from 10p.m. to 6a.m. or from 11p.m. to 7a.m.

Working time is when a person is “working, at his employer’s disposal and carrying out his activities or duties”. This includes time spent travelling as part of his/her work and undertaking job-related training. It does not include routine travel between home and work, rest breaks when no work is done, time spent travelling outside normal working time or time spent on non-job related training.
