Apprenticeships are a mixture of work-based and college education. There are two types, and the level appropriate for an individual depends on their abilities, job requirements and career aspirations.
Apprenticeship
This takes between 12 months and two years to complete. The completed framework comprises NVQ level 2, technical certificate level 2 and appropriate key skills. The emphasis is on practical work, enabling apprentices to improve their skills with their employer. There is an opportunity to progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship.
Advanced Apprenticeship
Learners on this course are aiming for technical, supervisory or junior management roles and are in full-time paid employment. Training lasts for up to four years and incorporates NVQ level 2 and level 3, technical certificates level 2 and 3 and all relevant key skills. An Advanced Apprenticeship can provide a route to higher education and NVQs at levels 4 and 5.
Modern Apprenticeship
In Scotland, Modern Apprenticeships take a minimum of three years to complete, depending on different courses. On completion of the apprenticeship, learners will have achieved SVQ level 2 and 3. It is also necessary to achieve relevant core skills. All apprentices must be in full-time employment as these courses rely on work-based training.
