Unite Demands National Training Levy

Apr 30 2008

Unite is seeking to secure a national training levy to ensure schemes are set up and more apprentices are recruited. Currently, only one in 10 businesses provides apprenticeships or quality workplace training. The union believes employers should be obliged to provide a minimum number of apprenticeship places.

Unite also wants to impose a minimum weekly wage for apprentices in line with the youth minimum wage rate of £3.40 an hour. This would increase apprentices’ wages from £80 to £110 per week.
